Looking Back : 2009’s Top Covers
Continuing our year end wrap ups, we present MDC’s favorite covers of 2009. Be sure to catch our favorite campaigns too!
01. W, November 2009
Photographer: Pierpaolo Ferrari
Model: Linda Evangelista
W’s November cover was a timely and irreverent send up of the current economic situation, risky subject matter for a fashion publication but W pulled it off admirably.
02. Acne Paper, S/S 09
Photographer: Daniel Jackson
Model: Missy Rayder
Acne Paper, always has striking covers but Daniel Jackson’s image of a blindfolded Missy Rayder was pitch perfect.
03. Dazed & Confused, April 2009
Photographer: Josh Olins
Model: Lakshmi Menon
The Lakshmi as goddess theme never gets old and Dazed’s cover was simply stunning; if there was one magazine that jumped out at you from the newsstand, it was this one.
04. Numero, May 2009
Photographer: Solve Sundsbo
Model: Magdalena Frackowiak
White orchids, platinum haired Magdalena - this cover was pure elegance.
05. Tar Magazine S/S 09
Artist: Damien Hirst
Model: Kate Moss
Artist collaborations always make for interesting covers and Damien Hirst’s vision of Kate Moss, was an especially intriguing (and attention grabbing) take on the issue’s theme of transparency.
06. Wallpaper, October 2009
Photographer: Karl Lagerfeld
Model: Baptiste Giabiconi
Say what you will about Karl Lagerfeld, but he doesn’t beat around the bush : peel back the first image of Baptiste on Wallpaper’s cover and you will find an even more revealing picture of the world’s foremost male model.
07. i-D, September 2009
Photographer: Emma Summerton
Models: Sessilee Lopez, Jourdan Dunn, Arlenis Sosa and Chanel Iman
i-D’s irreverent headlines never fail to amuse and The bold “pretty young things” on the cover, is the perfect description for these four beauties. 2009 had plenty of multi-girl covers but this was the coolest hands down.
08. Muse, F/W 2009
Photographer: Panos Yiapanis
Model: Natasha Poly
Both covers of Natasha’s special issue were great but the shot of her in Givenchy’s couture finery was especially haunting.
09. Vogue Italia March 2009
Photographer: Steven Meisel
Models: Kinga Rajzak and Hanne Gaby Odiele
10. Vogue Italia, September 2009
Photographer: Steven Meisel
Models: Jamie Bochert, Anna Jagodzinska, Sasha Pivovarova, Ash Stymest, Christian Brylle, Max Rogers & Will Lewis
You can’t just pick one Vogue Italia! This years strongest VI covers featured Meisel at his most idiosyncratic; from a wild boar joining Jamie and Christian on their cover to the voyeur feel of Hanne and Kinga’s image, the best covers were the ones that went off in wild directions.
Looking Back : 2009’s Top Campaigns
Each year we see hundreds of fashion campaigns but only a few stand out from the fray, looking back at the year that was these were the campaigns that caught our eye and held our attention.
01. Givenchy F/W 09
Photographers: Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott
Models: Adriana Lima, Iris Strubegger, Mariacarla Boscono, Leonor Scherrer & Ranya Mordanova
Adriana Lima for Givenchy may have been the casting coup of the year, but the entire campaign is a seamlessly chic representation of the Tisci aesthetic.
02. Lanvin F/W 09
Photographer. Steven Meisel
Model: Kristen McMenamy
If anyone can take the concept of crazy cat lady and make it fashionable, it is Kristen, these ads were simply priceless and unforgettable.
03. Valentino F/W 09
Photographers: Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott
Model: Iris Strubegger
Valentino’s fall images presented a seductive take on glamour : the combination of Iris and Mert & Marcus is always a winner and these ads play to their strengths as a team.
04. Stella MCartney F/W 09
Photographer: Ryan McGinley
Model: Sigrid Agren
Whether you loved the idea of Disney creatures invading Stella’s ads, or found it cloying, you have to admit that the images were attention grabbing and fresh.
05. Balenciaga S/S 09
Photographer: David Sims
Models: Katie Fogarty, Elsa Sylvan, Hanne Gaby Odiele, Amanda Laine, Kinga Rajzak, Iris Strubegger, Anna Jagodzinska, Darya Kurovska, Anya Kazakova and Diana Farkhullina
David Sims is a master of futurist imagery and Nicolas Ghesquière’s S/S collection lent itself to this sci-fi interpretation ; lots of ads go for android chic but few succeed as admirably.
06. Missoni F/W 09
Photographer: Ryan McGinley
Models: Hanne Gaby Odiele & Devin Childers
Everything about this campaign was a breath of fresh air ; the outdoor setting, the blurry look and the inspired casting made for a truly different take on Missoni.
07. Bottega Veneta S/S 09
Photographer: Larry Sultan
Model: Emma Maclaren & Sean Harju
There was something unsettling about Bottega’s Spring series, as perfect as Emma looked in Tomas Maier’s ensembles, you still got the feeling that things were awry. The mood created by Larry Sultan’s eerie photographs, leaves viewers wondering about the larger story within the pictures. Nothing like an ad that pulls you in and piques your curiosity.
08. Chloe S/S 09
Photographer: Mikael Jansson
Models: Anna Jagodzinska & Toni Garrn
When it came time to visually define Hannah Macgibbon’s unique perspective for Chloe, Mikael Jansson’s ads did just the trick. Taking two of the new generation’s most iconic blondes and casting them as the ultimate Chloe girls, served as an incredible showcase for Hannah’s soft seperates.
09. Jil Sander S/S 09
Photographer: Willy Vanderperre
Model: Natasha Poly
Willy Vanderperre’s images for Jil Sander represent everything a campaign ought to be : his pictures are striking, memorable and take the clothes to another level. Compare the way Raf Simon’s fringed pieces look on the runway to the way Vanderperre photographs them and you’ll be blown away by the artistry Willy brings to his work.
10. Prada S/S 09
Photographer: Steven Meisel
Models: Ymre Stiekema, Viktoriya Sosonkina, Giedre Dukauskaite, Anna Jagodzinska, Sigrid Agren, Nimue Smit and Katrin Thormann
Meisel’s Prada muses campaign was destined to become iconic, it takes one of the best collections of the year and highlights everything that made it great. From the softness of Meisel’s color palette mimicing the muted bronzes and rusts Miuccia sent down the runway, to the references to classical art, each part of the campaign is flawless.

Time To Enlist
Richard Phibbs’ latest editorial “Boot Camp” featured in the French publication L’Équipe, is a brilliant throwback to 1940’s propaganda. The feature includes favorites Chad White, Kerry Degman and Oraine Barrett and up and coming stars Mike Derr and Ryan Bertroche in an aesthetic similar to that of Frank Capra’s Army recruitment films during World War II. It captures a classic masculine ideal and hails to a disciplinary theme that we’ve seen reoccurring in recent editorials. (story by Gary Mazrek)

Wilderness Retreat
who is more at home in an outdoor editorial than Daria Werbowy? The Canadian beauty seems completely at ease in Patrick Demarchelier’s vivid images of Lake Powell, Utah for American Vogue. Whether she is rock climbing or practicing yoga, Daria manages to make it look easy. The striking scenery paired with Daria’s athleticism and grace, makes for an incredible fashion story.
Madonna for Dolce & Gabbana
Madonna by Steven Klein for Dolce & Gabbana S/S 10, goes back to her and the label’s Mediterranean roots. Read more about the campaign at Swide.com. (Image courtesy of our friends at d Management)
